Minimalism: My Journey Thus Far

Hi Darlings,

It may sound completely ridiculous that I have a beauty blog but I have the mindset of a minimalist. If you looked at my bedroom you probably wouldn’t believe I have a minimalist mindset either but over the last year, I have tremendously decreased the amount of “stuff” I buy and have been decluttering what I own almost every other week.

I believe minimalism truly is a mindset and a lifestyle and I have the mindset down, I am working on the lifestyle part still. I wouldn’t say I ever had a hoarding issue or a stockpiling issue, but rather just hold onto things I never used such as clothes and even knick-knacks for my apartment. I love shopping, and I specifically love thrift store shopping because you can get almost anything you want for a minimal price but it ended up making my wardrobe expand into something I didn’t ever expect it to. I was buying designer clothes just because they were inexpensive and I was barely looking at the item or if it would even be worn once after I brought it home. Similarly, with makeup, I would go to Ulta all the time and buy heaps of makeup with the intention of wearing it every day but I ended up with overwhelming amounts of products and not enough face to wear them. It took a big step for me to decide to change but I have and I’m going to briefly talk about what I have done and how to maintain it.

If I’m going, to be honest with you, it was Youtube videos and blog posts about minimalism that truly inspired me to change my ways. I was watching a few videos that explained what minimalism was and how each person went through a process of decluttering. I knew almost immediately this was something I needed to do. I never grew an emotional attachment to any of my clothes, makeup, jewelry, etc, so it wasn’t that hard to do so. I know some people may think they need to keep something because they spent so much money on something but at the end of the day if it isn’t making you completely happy or being used often, it doesn’t need to be in your house.

I did end up decluttering my items, and it felt amazing, and I took a vow to not purchase what I didn’t need after I did this. I also decided at the time I would only purchase cruelty-free makeup products or vegan makeup products. This lasted probably a few weeks before I splurged again on makeup, and a month or so went by before I was back to using some non-cruelty-free products. I’m saying this because I want to be honest because this process to minimalism is not easy. However, I have the best intentions when it comes to what I own and I have managed to keep my makeup collection down, my clothing in order and at a minimum, and I no longer buy endless amounts of things for no reason. I am human, and I enjoy shopping but I try to shop with a purpose now. I also take a few moments a few times a month to go through my things and ask myself if I’m actually using it or if I should purge it from my collection/wardrobe/etc.

Another substantial part of minimalism is your thoughts and actions. It is important to keep your mind in a happy place and it is hard to do that when you are constantly thinking about a thousand things at once. The way I have combated this behavior is by writing things down and making lists or keeping organized. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling right now.

Minimalism, I have learned, is something you need to keep up with and I am not a minimalist by any means compared to some people but I have truly decided to have less in my life has given me more time to focus on my life instead of my possessions.

I do hope I can challenge myself to go through more areas of my life and remove extra clutter and I will certainly update you in the future when I do.

If you are looking for more information on minimalism, I recommend Pinterest or searching it on YouTube!

Have a lovely night,

Get To Know Me! <3

Hello, my gorgeous friends!

Today I thought I’d do a less formal blog post and talk about a subject I don’t like to talk about too much but the subject is me! I want to get to know who is reading my blog and I also want you guys to feel like you actually know who is writing all these posts.

My name is Julie, and I love Alice in Wonderland, which is why I named my website after it.

So, I guess I should start off with the basics – I am twenty-seven and I live in Wisconsin. I have a dog named Bellatrix, named after the Harry Potter character who is a Yorkie. I love to spend most of my time outside (weather permitted) but I also love being cozy and spending time with my friends and family or just drinking tea, binge-watching British television programs. I have been writing for what seems like forever, and it is actually what I would like to do as a profession one day. Writing, music, art, literature, and dance are my favorite things. I am a huge mental health advocate as I do suffer from Schizoaffective (mood induced schizophrenia). I love beauty, and my sister is actually what influenced a lot of my love for beauty because she is an excellent makeup artist. As far as my own makeup choices, I do tend to go for a more natural look but I think experimenting with makeup can be so much fun, which is why I have chosen to affiliate with several beauty brands with different price points and a variety of products and all the products I talk about on my blog are ones I truly use every day or at least can give a recommendation from using them.

Some of my favorite things are Harry Potter, alternative music, Spongebob, thrift shopping, organizing/cleaning, making lists, decorating, volunteering, going to parks, avocados, crystals, perfume, baking vegan treats.

I love getting to know people, especially those with the same interests as me. If you are reading my blog please comment below with your name and a fun fact about you. Also if you ever need anything, even someone to vent to, please do not hesitate to reach out to me – I am here to build a community if I can. I am going to add a contact page to my site in the very near future so if you ever have anything you want to say to me in private, feel free to use that page.

I am all for girl power, girl bosses, and of course boy power and boy bosses. I do not discriminate and I have an open mind and heart.

I also am planning to do a small Holiday give away in December, if there’s enough interest so let me know if you’d like that!

Thank you for reading, and I will be posting again tomorrow!

E.L.F. Beautifully Bare Line; Review

I took a trip to Target to see if they had the E.L.F. new active line but they, unfortunately, did not have it available at my store. Instead, I purchased a few products from the Beautifully Bare line. I picked up five items which I thought would create a simple and wearable look. This line, to me, is meant to be used on the “no-makeup-makeup” days. I just talked about that in one of my posts, so scroll down a bit and you will find that. I really appreciate E.L.F. trying to remind us we don’t need to apply so much makeup that we are unrecognizable and it’s okay to just enhance our natural beauty.

First, I applied the Foundation Serum in the shade “Fair/Light” which was a wonderful match for my skin tone and this was definitely more of a serum foundation than anything because the consistency was very thin and had more of a watery consistency. As far as coverage goes, I’d say it was medium coverage which for me is perfect on a day where I’m not wearing much makeup, seeing as my skin has hyperpigmentation. I really enjoyed this foundation and I feel like it will last me a long time because of the amount of coverage you get for very little product, and I applied this using a buffing brush. The result of this is a beautiful, natural looking finish and I really enjoyed it. 5/5 for me.

After that, I applied the Lightweight Concealer in”Light/Medium”, which was definitely the wrong shade for me. This shade was a low more yellow-toned than the foundation and simply did not mix very well with my base of the foundation. The texture is definitely creamy but provides more of a matte coverage in my opinion than a dewy one, which means you have to work quite quickly with the concealer to make sure it is blended in properly. As far as application, I honestly recommend your finger or a damp beauty sponge to bring back a little of the creaminess after applied. It was hard to rate this but overall, I’d give it a 4/5 mostly due to the fact that it was the wrong shade for me and because it dried down quite quickly and matte.

Next, it wasn’t a necessary step I suppose but I wanted to test out the Sheer Tint Finishing Powder in “Fair/Light”. This was a huge pan of powder, and I definitely did not need very much of this to achieve matte skin. I honestly like dewier or natural skin but sometimes a powder is a must especially for long wear makeup days. This powder does exactly what it says it will though because it seemed to minimize my pores and provide light coverage. I think this powder would look nice on bare skin as well as over foundation on a day you just want something on your face that will control oil and give you a bit of color. 5/5.

Onto blush, I used the Blush in Rose Royalty. I absolutely adored this product, to be quite honest with you. I think it is a perfectly pigmented, soft, creamy blush which every girl should own. I am one of those people that blush just doesn’t seem to show up on but it is my favorite beauty item, but this blush absolutely showed up and it looked like I was blushing naturally. I always wish I was one of those girls who looked like she was out in the English countryside, walking her dog on a chilly morning who came home with a rosy flush and this is exactly what look this blush can give you. My suggestion is to apply with your fingers and make it as natural looking as possible. 5/5+5(hehe).

Lastly, I picked up the Liptint in Sheer Berry. I’m not going to lie, I had no idea how to take the cap off but when I did, I was pleasantly surprised with the applicator. It was one of the squeeze-tip applicators they use on the First Aid Beauty lip treatment. This color is gorgeous, it is so natural and basically a “my-lips-but-better” shade. I really enjoyed that this stained my lips the color it was applied as well as moisturized my lips so they don’t feel dry when it does dry down. 5/5

Overall, this is a great line in my opinion. The products are of such high quality and do not cost much at all, everything in this line is $8 or less. If you are interested in shopping for E.L.F. I have an affiliate link on my page, and I truly do stand by their products and have for years.

My Choices for Fall Perfumes

Happy Sunday, darlings!

If you couldn’t tell, Fall is my favorite season. It has the perfect weather, foods, and activities that certainly make it easy to love. Another reason I adore fall is that it means that richer and sweeter scents are on the market. In this post, I will talk about four of my favorite fall time perfumes or body sprays that I have been using this season so far.

Zum Mist: with Frankincense & Myrrh.  I am a huge fan of essential oils so when I saw this at Target I had to grab it. I am very fond of the smell of Frankincense and together with Myrrh, it is exactly as it is described: dreamy and woodsy. It is a scent which will last almost all day, and can also be used as a room spray. This scent is difficult to describe because it is purely two essential oils mixed together but I urge you to smell this one if you see it in store.

Viktor & Rolf: Flower Bomb. Now, this is a perfume, which makes it a lot more fragrant and has a longer lasting power. Flower bomb is a warm floral scent is how I would personally describe it. According to their website, it is described as a feminine, fresh, floral. I love this for the fall because it is so heavy and continues to last throughout the day but it is not potent or nauseating as some can be.

Bath&Body: Salted Caramel Apricot. Salted caramel apricot is the epitome of fall scents. This is a warm, fuzzy, sweet scent which reminds me of fall treats baking in the oven. If they do not have this seasonal scent next year I will be super disappointed because this particular fragrance has made me feel warm and cozy every time I put it on. The smell is exactly what it sounds like, warm caramel with an apricot underlying scent. Run to Bath & Body,  you won’t regret it!

Calvin Klein: CK2. CK2 is a different type of fragrance. The best way I can describe it is peppery yet fresh. It is a gender neutral fragrance which I totally believe is true. I honestly think it leans more on the masculine side of fragrance but that may just be because of my other personal choices in fragrance. According to the website, this is a fresh, warm, and electric type of fragrance. This fragrance will definitely get you compliments! It is very unique and I am glad it is part of my collection.

It was truly hard to pick my favorite fall time scents but these were the few I have been reaching for lately!

Leave a comment and tell me your favorite fall fragrance! I’d love that!

DIY: At Home Skincare

You don’t know this about me but I almost started my own Etsy shop for skincare. I honestly took a good month out of my life and dedicated some time to producing products which were not only useful but also sustainable. Unfortunately, it was a lot more difficult than I anticipated and I had to stop my venture in starting a natural skincare shop on my own, but I learned a lot about skincare in that short period of time and I wanted to share a few DIY products you can make at home.

So, first off – exfoliating is an amazing thing and the right exfoliator can truly make your skin feel fresh and soft in a matter of minutes. My favorite exfoliator is two ingredients:

  1. Sea Salt
  2. Olive Oil

This is the perfect combination to provide smooth, silky skin.

A toner is another excellent way to remove impurities and balance skin. I found that mixing two simple ingredients made the best toner I’ve ever used!

  1. Witch Hazel
  2. Tea Tree Oil
  3. Essential Oil Of Your Choice [for topical use, optional]

This product made my skin feel so clean and refreshed, and I urge you to try it. You could also put this in a spray bottle and use it as a setting spray.

For a mask, you really want something hydrating as well as something that will depuff and I found one that truly does both of those things, and this one only has three lovely, natural ingredients.

  1. Raw Honey
  2. Olive Oil
  3. Coffee Grounds

Honestly, this mask made my skin feel lovely and works well for any type of skin.

These three are wonderful and natural DIYs with ingredients you most likely already have.

I do not have exact measurements for these recipes because at the time I was using them I was simply experimenting and did not determine specific amounts needed. What I can suggest is putting even amounts of each product in, and that should do the trick!

I really hope you try these out and if you want more recipes that worked for me, leave me a comment because I actually have many others I can share as well!

The No-Makeup-Makeup-Look

Hello, my loves! Happy Saturday!

In accordance with the weekend, I thought I’d discuss my typical makeup look that I wear during the weekend (and some of the week). I try to be a more minimalistic beauty person, I tend to go for more simple makeup looks that are natural and can be worn on an everyday basis. However, there are still times when I do a full face of makeup! So, the look I’m going to talk about today is basically when I want to wear makeup but not look like I am wearing any — or at least not much.

I have four products which make up my no-makeup look.

Base: BB Cream, which stands for BEAUTY BALM, and is known to have more skin benefits, but typically less coverage, these often have an SPF in the formula. I’ve used several different BB creams, and a few of my favorites are the Rimmel Radiance BB Cream, Tarte BB Cream, and Maybelline Dream BB. Another great product for these days is a skin tint, which is basically a small amount of coverage that evens out your natural skin tone. I recommend Rimmel’s Skin Tint or Glossier skin tint.

Blush: I typically do not like to use a powder blush on these days but rather use a cream formula, or even a creamy lipstick to bring color back into my face. My favorite cream blush is from Wet & Wild, which is their Photofocus blush range, they come in a stick form, and all their colors are absolutely wonderful and easy to apply and inexpensive! I’d also recommend the Glossier Cloud Paints which come in the colors Dusk, Beam, Puff, and Haze which are all natural, buildable colors which look like you were born with glow and color.

Brows: Brows are such an important part of your daily makeup routine whether it is a full face of makeup or just a few key items. Brows frame your face and can make you look a lot more youthful if done correctly, so make sure the items you use on your brows works with what you need them to do. Personally, I only need one item for my brows because they are definitely more on the full side but I like to fill in some sparse areas so I use a wax brow pencil by ELF. I highly recommend looking at ELF brow products because they are so inexpensive and have the ability to transform your brows and they last for months!

Balm: On days when I wear less makeup I really don’t see the need to wear a bold lip or even a lipstick at all. Instead, I choose a lip balm, and my favorite is the cherry chapstick. I honestly cannot get enough of the feeling of a nice balm on my lips, and the cherry chapstick also provides a bit of color to my lips. If you need something a little richer, try something like a vaseline or even a gloss can sometimes provide extra hydration.

Obviously, this look can be modified depending on the season or whatever your preferences are, so have fun with it!

There’s a quote by Rosie Huntington Whitely which I really enjoy and it says “makeup is meant to enhance, not hide” and I strongly believe in this when it comes to my own makeup.

Have a lovely day,

5 Little Ways to Show Yourself Self-Love.

Hello, darlings,

So, I think it is evident that I am a strong encourager of self-love, self-care, and increasing your self-esteem through your actions. I thought I’d break it down into 5 ways to promote self-love on a daily basis.

  1. Be conscious of your inner voice. Often we entrap ourselves in a world of our own and in that world sometimes we have a very negative outlook on ourselves. Try to change this if this is the case simply by addressing the fact that you have these thoughts, and be aware of how they make you feel and try to adjust them into more positive, loving thoughts. It is perfectly okay if this does not feel comfortable right away and it will take practice, but you’ll get used to thinking more pleasant thoughts over time.
  2. Treat yourself. Honestly, we spend most of our time, efforts, and money on other people or things that are standard priorities. It is often that we forget that we deserve a little pick me up, or treat. Whether this is a candy bar, or a new scarf or purse, or even a luxury makeup product we absolutely deserve it and it will remind us we are worthy of it!
  3. Set priorities. Knowing your priorities in life is essential to self-love because it means when you make them a priority or accomplish your goals that you have taken time and invested in yourself. You need to feel like you have a purpose in life and your purpose needs to come from a source that makes you feel good and whole. So, simply make a list of these things and work on them. If most of your time is being put into other things that are not on this list, try to make a change.
  4. Take to the “bare necessities.” Remember to hydrate, eat wholesomely, get enough sleep. and stay active. These are the bare necessities which will absolutely help with self-love and improve self-esteem because no matter what is going on around you as long as you are taking care of these necessary items, you will have the energy and the health to focus on any other issues that may arise.
  5. Meditate and focus. So, the last bit of advice I can give for improving self-love and awareness is to meditate. This is so vital to improving your relationship with yourself because it gives you time to be with yourself! You can either choose to address your thoughts or simply let yourself be free and tranquil. It’s all up to you but no matter what, you need to spend time with yourself and allow yourself to get through your thoughts and emotions. It is essential!

This is a very small list of things, and I may continue this list in an upcoming post but please try to think of yourself this weekend. Make yourself your priority and you will blossom and bloom.

Much love,
