Self-Care Essentials

Hello, lovelies!

Today I am going to be talking about a few self-care essentials, or a self-care starter kit for everyday use. I think the philosophy behind self-care is wonderful, and it allows us to take care of ourselves to allow us to have the capacity to take care of others. We are constantly concerned about other people’s care but rarely do we think of our own when people close to us are stressed out as well. I thought it would be a great idea to post some of the things I use for my own self-care. At the moment I am recovering from a very stressful month and have used certain techniques to bring myself back to a more relaxed state.

Here are a few essentials for a self-care routine:

A clean space. A clean space will allow you to not have to think about when you need to make the bed next or fold your laundry because it will already be done. Spend a while looking at your space, whether it just be your bedroom or your whole house. This will allow you to assess what needs to be done, what you need to change, and then change it. Our minds cannot relax if we are constantly looking at a mess around us or thinking about our next set of chores. The cleaning may not all get done in one round but you will find if you work on decluttering and cleaning, over time it will become second nature and you will feel the relief and know you are taking care of yourself and your things.

Aromatherapy. This method of relaxation has been around for ages, and it is one that will never cease to work (unless you are sensitive to smell). I have always loved candles not only for the scent but for the calming warmth they provide. Lighting a candle is like opening up a new environment because every candle is slightly different, and it could be summer and you could immediately be transported to a winter with a woodsy candle. It’s similar to perfumes, one day you may choose to wear a fragrance you wore over the autumn months during July and you remember the days of falling leaves just by smelling it on your skin. My suggestion to you is to spray your favorite perfume before you head out the door, whether it be on you or around you. This will be a great way to start off your day, especially if you are in a gloomy mood. Essential oils are also a great option as well.

Garden. This may be more of a seasonal suggestion but getting yourself out in nature and gardening is a wonderful way to soothe your anxiety or feeling of being overwhelmed. If I ever feel like I cannot handle being inside or simply feel like too many things are on my mind I take a break and go outside. I honestly will say I used to dislike pulling weeds or getting my hands dirty but now I feel it’s a blessing from nature to me. The fresh air, the slight sweaty feeling from getting out in the sun and being physical is worth doing. Even if you just want to go outside and pick a few weeds or sit in the grass and run your hands through it, it will help.

Tea. I do not know where I would be without tea, and I am not being dramatic. Tea has been a source of happiness for me over the last five years. It is almost the steps you take to make the tea that is the most rewarding for me. I love heating up the kettle, and pouring the hot water over the tea leaves, and the decision of what tea I want to drink just makes me so very happy – and don’t forget to pick out the mug! Honestly, it’s just a nice routine to have in the morning or in the evening or any time of day that helps you slow down a bit and take time for yourself which is what we all need. Plus it’s delicious! My favorite tea is peppermint at the moment but I also am partial to flavored green teas, and my mug of choice is a mermaid one from Pier One. What are your favorites?

Time. To be quite honest, the thing we need most to take care of ourselves is time to ourselves. We need time to digest what is happening, and let ourselves express our emotions even if it is just to ourselves. We don’t need to think for hours on end, but we do need to process and feel.

Some activities you might want to try for your self-care routine are:

taking a long bath
giving yourself a scalp massage
creative writing
art therapy
brain aerobics
crocheting or knitting
light exercise
preparing your favorite dish
talking to a friend
watching a comedy
planning in your planner
shopping at a local farmer’s market
eating a sweet treat
going to sleep early
sleeping in
going for a drive
playing with your pet
playing a video game
planning a trip
paint your nails
research something you’ve always wanted to know about

Anything that inspires you, or makes you feel happy and whole is perfect for self-care. You are beautiful, intelligent, caring, and perfect just the way you are! Remember that! Let me know in the comments what you do for yourself to show you love yourself. I am always eager to hear about other people’s self-care routines.

Until next time,

– Julie.

#GirlBoss Morning Routine Habits

Hi, my loves!

I am fully enthralled with the trend of girl bosses and hope it remains a trend until the end of time. We all come from different backgrounds and girl boss may mean many different things to different people but it, in the end, is a statement of power and knowing you can handle anything or any obstacle that comes to life. I am going to go over a few (basic) routine habits you can add to your current morning schedule that will bring health, happiness, and clarity to your day which in turn will allow you to focus on being a #GirlBoss.

  1. Start every day hydrated. Drink water, hydrate your body and don’t reach for the coffee right away. Studies show that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can make you more jittery, so take time to make a healthy breakfast, drink your water, and then grab a coffee.
  2. Yoga. Yoga is an excellent way to start your day because it will not only relax you but it will give you a light stretch of your muscles which will release any tension or strain from sleeping. This time can also be used to bring clarity to your mind and you can set an intention for the upcoming day.
  3. Look at your schedule/To-Do List. Take a few moments to look at your To-Do List and prioritize your day, make sure you do not overschedule yourself but do enough where you feel accomplished. If you have work or school that day, try to find time to schedule a leisure activity even if on a small scale because it will benefit you to have some downtime.
  4. Get ready and enjoy it. We often overlook this time of the day but it can be a calming ritual for us if we allow it. Putting on makeup or doing our hair, taking a shower, applying perfume, changing our clothes can be a time to reflect or even just watch inspiring Youtube videos and get into a positive mindset. If we see getting ready as a chore, it will be a chore and we won’t view it as a time to be alone and take care of ourselves.
  5. Tidy Up. This is something I feel should be done at all times but making your bed, putting away any clothes you chose not to wear or putting your products back should be a step you should add to your routine if you haven’t already. I love the feeling of coming home and not having to worry about a mess since I put items away as I am done with them.

These are just a few habits everyone should incorporate in their day no matter who they are because it will establish a base routine to add more positive habits.

Girl bosses and guy bosses know themselves, and they know themselves well. They encourage others like they encourage themselves. They are passionate and thoughtful and know how to make decisions. I truly admire all of the people out there who are able to work hard for what they want and have a fierce determination.

Have a lovely, positive evening!

Dove Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo Review

Hello, my loves!

I have been experiencing some extra oily hair due to a shampoo I’ve been using (which I will most likely stop using) but I decided I wanted a new dry shampoo. I’ve struggled with some dry shampoos due to the fact that I have black hair and the product is white, or just simply for the fact that it doesn’t work. I ended up picking up a new one, by Dove and I am just going to do a little review so you can get an idea of how well it works for someone who has been experiencing oily/product built up hair.

I’ve never used a Dove dry shampoo before, so  I honestly didn’t know what to expect and I haven’t heard much on whether it is a quality dry shampoo but out of desperation of finding a better dry shampoo I picked up the Volumizing and Fullness formula. This comes with a lot of product for the price in my opinion, with 5 FLOZ, and I only paid around five dollars for it.

The first thing I noticed about it was the intoxicating smell, it literally smells like fresh flowers mixed with a rainforest. I’d probably use it for the smell alone! I applied the product in the traditional way you apply dry shampoo and it absorbed the excess oil from my hair within a second, without leaving a white residue behind. Sometimes with dry shampoos, they act for a little while but then the volume is usually flat five minutes later but with this one, it was able to maintain volume and add my life to my curls (shocking, I know).

The interesting thing about this product is it says it does not contain water, and I’m wondering if the other dry shampoos on the market contain water, therefore resulting in flat, and lifeless, as well as eventually, oily hair.

I’m going to say this was a wonderful surprise and I will most definitely be repurchasing this product when I run out. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to add volume back into their hair on a no-wash day.

I will be posting regularly this week, and I’m excited about my next few posts – also let me know if you’ve tried any of Dove’s dry shampoos or which dry shampoo works best for you! ❤

My Sunday Night Routine

Hello, my dears!

Today is Sunday which is my favorite day of the week. I personally enjoy it due to being able to sleep in, watch football, and enjoy time with my friends and family. I thought I would go over my Sunday night routine and let you guys in on how I prepare for the week ahead.

My favorite part of Sunday night is doing a little pamper session, which usually starts at 7 PM and I start by taking off my makeup. I take my makeup off with grapeseed oil and then wash my face with Biore baking soda wash. This usually removes all the makeup and the dirt but I then go over with a homemade rose witch hazel toner with a cotton round until my face is definitely clean. After I’ll take a shower and I’ll do all the extra steps which I may not have time for during the week, so I wash my hair, shave my legs, do a scrub (currently using St. Ives Coconut and Coffee scrub for a more exfoliating scrub), and of course I use a yummy smelling body wash, like the Soap and Glory ‘Clean On Me’ or Philosophy ‘Fresh Cream’.  After the shower, I moisturize immediately from top to toe, and I am currently in love with Sea Greens by H20+ Beauty. After, I’ll finish up my skin care routine with a face mask – typically it has been the Aztec Benzanite Clay one, mixed with apple cider vinegar, and let me tell you, it is a strong mask! Once applied and washed off, I will then apply a moisturizer – usually sweet almond oil or Vitamin E oil.

By this time, I feel like a whole new person and I will head to my kitchen to make some tea, which is usually a Yogi tea and it is the Detox tea. I like this detox tea because it is an herbal tea for one and it tastes delicious and I always feel a lot better afterward. I then get out one of my planners (yes, I have multiple) and work on my main schedule for the week. I put in my appointments, meetings, dates with friends, and then I have been adding what blogs I should post and when so I don’t have to mess around with figuring out a topic because I already have the idea written down. I like to decorate my planner as well so I usually add some cute stickers or reminder notes that are positive and will draw my attention to my planner.

After I’m done with my regular planner, I will open up my meal planner for the week. I like to do this before the week starts because I usually have an accurate overview of what is in my fridge seeing as I just went shopping over the weekend. I split my day up into “breakfast”, “lunch”, “dinner”, and “snacks” and write down what I hope to have for each meal. I am not saying I am perfect but it definitely helps to look in advanced before you get so hungry you just eat anything you can get your hands on.

I will then go to my room and take a look at my clothes and will pick out my outfit for Monday along with accessories, shoes, and any other things I need for Monday. I also put my planner in my purse and tidy it up by throwing away any receipts or unnecessary collected items. At this point, I will also tidy up anything in my room that needs to be tidied.

I then will do yoga before I get ready for bed, so I do some basic stretches and yoga movements and try to mentally prepare myself for the stressful upcoming week. I really need this time to focus, meditate, and recuperate – especially after this week, which was very difficult for me.

Lastly, I brush my teeth, put lip balm or Carmex on, and put some lotion on my feet and put socks on. I grab my dog, Bellatrix, and we hit the lights and are fast to sleep..ZZzzzzz.

Soap & Glory – Clean On Me – Scrub Of Your Life – Review

Hello, my darlings,

I have been using Soap and Glory products since I saw the products at Target about a year or so ago. I feel like I have tested so many of their products since then and I have loved (almost) all of them. Today, I’m going to be touching on two products which I have been using over the last month or so and have come to a conclusion about how I feel about them.

Okay, so the first product I’ll be talking about is Clean On Me, which is a body wash which has the consistency of a lotion. The first thing I noticed was this body wash comes with a ton of product. It contains 16.2 FL OZ which for the price (around $12) is a wonderful deal in my opinion. The bottle suggests that you turn off the shower before use so it doesn’t go straight down the drain but I simply put this on a loofa or washcloth and it lathers up quite nicely and you do not need much product to make it lather. The smell of this product is their famous “pink” smell, which to me is very hard to describe, it’s almost like a cologne yet it is feminine and floral. One thing I love about Soap & Glory products is the fact that you can smell the fragrance on your body long after you have showered and it holds true with this shower gel as well. I feel like this product also, because of it being a lotion consistency, does provide extra moisture to the skin and that is one of the claims on the bottle. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a new body wash, and I will repurchase.

For The Scrub Of Your Life, I feel like I have finally found the perfect exfoliator and I am not just saying this because I love Soap and Glory. The scrub of your life is not a deep exfoliator, it is more of an everyday type of product you can use in the shower in your routine. This scrub is more of a combination of a scrub and a body wash. The Scrub of Your Life has soft beads in it that lather up with the gel and provide a light textured gradient against the skin that actually helps with dry skin and even (I believe) has helped (in combination with other products) with my stretch marks. I love this, and I am glad I have found something I can use every day that also doesn’t need too much product to work and it comes with 6.7 FL OZ so it’s quite a bit! The smell is almost identical to the Clean On Me and I like pairing the two together to keep the scent going — and spraying some of their “Pink” body spray.  I will most definitely repurchase this.

Walgreens carries Soap and Glory now and almost always has their products on buy two get one free so if you are looking for a good deal, you can always go there to purchase.

Let me know in the comments if you have tried any Soap and Glory products and if so, what your favorites are! I’m always looking for new ones.

If you are interested, I can do a “What I keep in my shower” post, or even a video maybe? ❤

Hope you’re all having a great day,

How To Start Fresh & Make Changes

Hello, lovelies!

So today my blog post is going to be about starting fresh or making lifestyle changes when it seems like it is impossible. I have been in situations where it seems like the raincloud will not stop hovering over me and I felt like there was no escape from negativity in my life. I think it is important to remember we can start over and tomorrow, or even right now is a perfect time to do so. Below is an overview of what can help when you have to make a change in your life for the better. This is a repost of a blog I had done on a previous blog but I felt it was fitting for here today.

  • The first step in beginning again is truly spending time discovering what it is that is bothering you and be specific. If you feel, for example, you have been living an unhealthy lifestyle lately, ask yourself what it is that started you to decline on taking care of yourself. Go through and write down every thought you have that is in regards to your issue or issues and acknowledge it IS an issue. Sometimes we lie to ourselves and pretend it is not a huge deal that we are suffering. Anything from negative self-talk to binge drinking and everything in between can affect us more than we realize. The truth is if it is in any way making you uncomfortable, you need to address it but do not feel guilty about it. Write out your feelings, and any emotions you have, fill a notebook, fill two notebooks! This is the most important part of the process!
  • Now that you have written down and dissected the problem, ask yourself what you want to do about it. Is it something that you need to completely remove from your life or is it something you just need to modify? Write this down now. We often have habits we want to change but the task seems daunting. If you state what you specifically intend to change, it makes it easier.
  • Make a plan. You have now written down what is bothering you, you have written down everything that led up to the issue and what feelings you have surrounding it so the next step is to make a plan! So, if your unhealthy lifestyle is what you want to change – how are you going to do that? Make a list of things you can actually start doing, not things you just have good intentions for. This list can be short or a mile long, it doesn’t matter but you need to start somewhere. After this list is done, make another list – the “good intentions” list. These are things you want to get done eventually, but cannot do right away. You can work on these after you have made the original list a priority and a habit.
  • Focus. If you really want to change and start over fresh, it is not easy, and it takes time. There are not many people who are going to tell you they love breaking bad habits or making life changes but you will feel wonderful after you invest your time in making yourself happier and healthier. You are doing this for you and only you so make sure you are focusing on the WHO and WHY, the WHAT, WHERE, WHEN will fall into place.
  • Do it! I honestly feel if you take the time to process your feelings and actions they will be easier to mold into what you desire them to be. If it takes you longer do one of these steps, that isn’t an issue! This is all about you and I know you can do anything you set your mind to, so go ahead and get started on switching the light on in the darkness. You’ve got this, so go get it!

This may have been a more serious toned blog but I honestly believe in this method. The feelings behind our habits/actions/beliefs/attitudes are so important but rarely get addressed. I truly believe taking the time to analyze them and let them be known in their full capacity to ourselves is essential for personal growth.

Until next –

Much love,

Minimalism: My Journey Thus Far

Hi Darlings,

It may sound completely ridiculous that I have a beauty blog but I have the mindset of a minimalist. If you looked at my bedroom you probably wouldn’t believe I have a minimalist mindset either but over the last year, I have tremendously decreased the amount of “stuff” I buy and have been decluttering what I own almost every other week.

I believe minimalism truly is a mindset and a lifestyle and I have the mindset down, I am working on the lifestyle part still. I wouldn’t say I ever had a hoarding issue or a stockpiling issue, but rather just hold onto things I never used such as clothes and even knick-knacks for my apartment. I love shopping, and I specifically love thrift store shopping because you can get almost anything you want for a minimal price but it ended up making my wardrobe expand into something I didn’t ever expect it to. I was buying designer clothes just because they were inexpensive and I was barely looking at the item or if it would even be worn once after I brought it home. Similarly, with makeup, I would go to Ulta all the time and buy heaps of makeup with the intention of wearing it every day but I ended up with overwhelming amounts of products and not enough face to wear them. It took a big step for me to decide to change but I have and I’m going to briefly talk about what I have done and how to maintain it.

If I’m going, to be honest with you, it was Youtube videos and blog posts about minimalism that truly inspired me to change my ways. I was watching a few videos that explained what minimalism was and how each person went through a process of decluttering. I knew almost immediately this was something I needed to do. I never grew an emotional attachment to any of my clothes, makeup, jewelry, etc, so it wasn’t that hard to do so. I know some people may think they need to keep something because they spent so much money on something but at the end of the day if it isn’t making you completely happy or being used often, it doesn’t need to be in your house.

I did end up decluttering my items, and it felt amazing, and I took a vow to not purchase what I didn’t need after I did this. I also decided at the time I would only purchase cruelty-free makeup products or vegan makeup products. This lasted probably a few weeks before I splurged again on makeup, and a month or so went by before I was back to using some non-cruelty-free products. I’m saying this because I want to be honest because this process to minimalism is not easy. However, I have the best intentions when it comes to what I own and I have managed to keep my makeup collection down, my clothing in order and at a minimum, and I no longer buy endless amounts of things for no reason. I am human, and I enjoy shopping but I try to shop with a purpose now. I also take a few moments a few times a month to go through my things and ask myself if I’m actually using it or if I should purge it from my collection/wardrobe/etc.

Another substantial part of minimalism is your thoughts and actions. It is important to keep your mind in a happy place and it is hard to do that when you are constantly thinking about a thousand things at once. The way I have combated this behavior is by writing things down and making lists or keeping organized. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling right now.

Minimalism, I have learned, is something you need to keep up with and I am not a minimalist by any means compared to some people but I have truly decided to have less in my life has given me more time to focus on my life instead of my possessions.

I do hope I can challenge myself to go through more areas of my life and remove extra clutter and I will certainly update you in the future when I do.

If you are looking for more information on minimalism, I recommend Pinterest or searching it on YouTube!

Have a lovely night,

  • Julie
